We are part of an expert German non-profit association advocating and exercising flood prevention:
the HochwasserKompetenzCentrum (HKC):
The HKC brings together, in a unique network, people who are affected by flooding, the policymakers, and the broadest range of flooding stakeholders. The HKC has more than 120 members in Germany and abroad.
Through the resultant dialogue, the HKC encourages local flood prevention and awareness. At HKC, science and practice are brought together to bring about holistic flood prevention and the sustainable development, provision and transfer of expertise.
Through years of both practical work and scientific research, we have obtained simple but ground-breaking findings: bottom-up prevention is not only lacking; it is also critical to flood defence systems in the race against time that the pace of climate change has created. In this context, we are reaching out to create inter-disciplinary exchange, to deepen partnerships with relevant experts and the respective institutes, always with the aim of gathering information and reflecting on, consolidating and deepening the current state of science and technology and making all of its outcomes achievable and understandable for everyone.
Currently, the knowledge being gained in the fields of hydrology, geology, climatology and engineering by the respective scientists and experts is hardly being transferred to lay people at all. But it is precisely this knowledge that can prevent damage, spare costs and save lives. It is not even difficult to understand or put into practice. Thus, the current situation is as unnecessary as it is untenable – namely that today, homeowners around the world lack the awareness of both the extent of the risks posed to them by flooding, on the one hand, and of their own ability to mitigate significantly any potential damage, on the other.
This situation must not only be recognised by the scientists and experts, it must also be changed by them. This is what we do at Floodlabel:
The development of Floodlabel is based on close cooperation between international experts and professional water management associations. Their scientific developments and the results of their work over the last four years have made the concept of Floodlabel possible. These experts form the scientific foundation, our science base.
From their findings and experiences, the algorithms for assessing danger and thus the DNA of the Floodlabel have been developed, and are being continuously updated. These formulae enable the transfer to an evaluation matrix which has already been tested by certified experts from Germany’s water associations.
FLOODLABEL: straight + simple + practical
miniming & avoiding
flooding in our homes & shelters
Floodlabel’s mission is to close this gap between science and the general public. With Floodlabel, we are designing and implementing a smart governance tool for people’s own individual flood resilience initiatives.
As a first step, Floodlabel informs homeowners about their particular flood risks. Secondly, Floodlabel enables people in all kinds of living situations to undertake simple, practical and effective self-protection measures for their homes.
Now and here: test the level of your knowledge
The floodlabel survey
Our team of experts has developed a questionnaire on the status quo of your building, which is specifically addressed to the concerns of flood prevention. For an effective self-enquiry you have the possibility to answer detailed questions. As a result, you will receive free of charge an automated short evaluation of your object directly afterwards. However, this is not yet the floodlabel.
To achieve the floodlabel it still needs an expert checking all your indications to be plausible and correct.
